screw cabo
April 30, 2009 at 1:25 pm | In wedding | 2 CommentsSo, last night was our last night home together before we are MARRIED, and we spent all night replanning our honeymoon. We did it sort of begrudgingly because we were just so emotionally attached to Cabo at that point. We also had free lodging in Cabo (via a timeshare we had been given as a gift), so it was a bummer to give that up. And above all, we truly believed that the s***e flu would NOT have been an issue for us with where we were going. I think we both really feel that it’s being overblown and we would have been fine at our particular destination. So making that final decision to change plans was hard, and by that point I had a jaw headache that made me want to break my big toe just to distract me from my head pain. But essentially, our families had been asking us not to go, and then on top of that my company let me know that if I went to Mexico, they did not want me back on the premises for seven days following my return to the country, thank you very much. So as a plan B I started looking into flight transfers to other destinations…and guess where it’s going to be rainy next week? EVERYWHERE EXCEPT CABO. Raining in St. Croix, raining in Aruba, raining in Puerto Rico, raining in the entire Caribbean. Just as I was about to call off our entire wedding, I found the only other places on earth that are going to be mostly sunny next week: Baghdad and Maui. We decided to go with Maui. Two hours of research and one easy ticket transfer later and our honeymoon was changed. At the last possible second. And you all know that doing things at the last minute with no planning is how I love to do things.
Moving on: I took the day off from work today and am in last minute wedding mode. I also picked Matt G. to go home last night on AI and he did! Due to the travel craziness, I had to miss Lost. So don’t tell me what happened please la la la la la la la (covers ears).

IM conversation with my brother
April 29, 2009 at 6:46 pm | In conversations | 1 CommentBrother: There were senate hearings yesterday regarding the swine flu, and if they should rename it because it’s hurting the business of U.S. pork farmers.
Me: They should rename it “not swine flu”
Me: They should rename it “just flu”
Brother: That’s already used
Me: Ine-sway flu
Brother: They should call it media money maker flu
Me: Ha. Or mom panic flu.
SWINE DEATH honeymoon update
April 29, 2009 at 1:55 pm | In grumble grumble rant rant, wedding | 2 CommentsI had to laugh at this great CNN article lede:
There had been no confirmed deaths in the United States related to swine flu as of Tuesday afternoon. But another virus had killed thousands of people since January and is expected to keep killing hundreds of people every week for the rest of the year. That one? The regular flu.
Also had to laugh at the tagline that Gawker has been using for their swine flu posts (Aporkalypse Now).
In all seriousness, M. and I have been stressing about the fact that our parents don’t want us to go on our honeymoon trip and have been asking us to cancel. We don’t want to upset them, but deciding to cancel our honeymoon (aka our dream vacation) is not a simple call for us. It’s exactly the trip we wanted…nice romantic resort on a beautiful beach. There have been exactly zero cases of anyone getting sick in the Cabo region, and our flight goes from Dallas straight to Cabo. We also both tend to roll our eyes at alarmist media stories that sensationalize these kinds of things because it’s great for them and they make money off of it. The news industry is PSYCHED about the swine flu. It is happy when it shows up in a new area or when someone dies of it. This is literally how they make money and get people to pay attention to them. Remember the bird flu, which they said was going to be the END OF THE WORLD? So anyway, we’ve been paying close attention and we both feel like we will be fine. But our families feel differently about it and it’s making this week a lot more stressful.
Then I woke up this morning to find a monstrosity of a pimple emerging, the likes of which I haven’t had in probably years. Ridiculous as it may sound, in my mind this is about the most catastrophic thing that could happen this week. I’ve spent our engagement telling M. that the thing that would upset me the most about our wedding is if I had a big zit. And it’s happening. Aporkalypse now indeed.
ten mostly forgotten kids movies from the 80s.
April 28, 2009 at 9:20 pm | In tv and movies | 5 CommentsI think kids still watch the big, awesome kids movies from the 80s: The Neverending Story, Goonies, E.T., etc. I was recently going crazy with this vague memory of a movie I saw when I was 8 or 9 that I couldn’t recall…I knew it had to do with this boy who had some kind of special weird ability or something. Anyway, after some really odd google searches, I figured it out. It was a movie called D.A.R.Y.L. Apparently the kid was some kind of artifical intelligence being. Does anyone remember that movie??? It probably wasn’t very good, but it’s just interesting how movies can be so memorable to you when you watch them as a kid, even long after everyone else has forgotten about them.
So I was thinking about some of the other movies I watched a lot as a kid in the 80s that I’m sure are unknown to kids who are 8 or 9 now. But you guys might remember them. I’m sure some of these were TV movies, but it doesn’t matter.
1. Mr. Boogedy. I remember this being really really scary, but I’m pretty sure that in the end they get the bad guy with a vacuum cleaner, so it probably wasn’t as scary as I remember.
2. The Wizard. Fred Savage and Nintendo, two of the best things to emerge from the 80s.
3. The Ewok Adventure. I wasn’t into Star Wars, but I was very into this made for TV Ewok movie. Which I remember to be terrifying but I’m sure was in fact not.
4. The Last Unicorn. Love, love, love this weird, cool and kind of creepy movie.
5. Willow. I remember seeing this one in the theater and having to sit in the front row because I forgot my glasses. (Nerd.) It was a really awesome fantasy adventure kind of movie.
6. The Boy who could fly. I vaguely remember this one. Barely actually. There was a boy who could fly, for sure.
7. The Girl Who Spelled Freedom. This was a true story about a girl from Cambodia whose family ends up in the US, and she ends up being the best spelling bee person ever. It’s probably really dated and man that title really hits you over the head, but I’m pretty sure this movie warmed the icy heart.
8. Space Camp!!!! Omg…a bunch of kids go to space camp and then accidentally launch a rocket into space. Could happen! And Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston and Tate Donovan were in it as frisky space loving teens. And apparently Joaquin Phoenix as little 12 year old Max!! Who knew?
9. The Watcher in the Woods, which I’m sure I’ve mentioned before. The definitive scary classic of my childhood. They should re-release this in the theaters!
10. Flight of the Navigator. This was a really memorable movie. This kid gets abducted by aliens and is suddenly the same age when everyone else has gotten older, so they end up studying him in a facility where he makes friends with young Sarah Jessica Parker, and somehow then ends up flying a super fun alien spacecraft.

monday ramblings
April 27, 2009 at 6:21 pm | In daily ramblings | Leave a CommentI was so happy that M. and I had the weekend before our wedding totally free. It felt like a really long weekend the way they do when you don’t have any commitments, so we were able to kind of do it all: hang out together, do things on our own, spend time in the sun, and get some last minute wedding stuff done. We went to the park on Saturday to enjoy the beautiful weather for a couple hours. We packed for Mexico. And yes we know about the swine flu. Don’t worry, we won’t catch it. Promise.
The packing took kind of a long time. We got to break out our awesome new luggage for its first use. I sort of had fun because I like packing. It appeals to the parts of my personality that like: organizing, planning, clean clothes, folding things, and lists (in no particular order). I learned that M. does not enjoy or have any patience (or talent) for folding or rolling clothes in a neat fashion. No worries. More for me to fold!
Sunday I went to the gym for the Workout of Workouts. I’ve previously mentioned how much I love it when there is no one at my office’s gym on the weekends. I broke out the tape measure this weekend and I have to share…three inches! In the hip region that is. Three inches down from a few months ago and I was kind of thrilled, and perhaps I should keep my hip inches to myself but what is the point of having a personal blog that seven people read if you can’t talk about your triumphant reduction in hip inches? I will happily take an inch or two back after the wedding in exchange for reintroducing chocolate and pasta to my life, but that was my goal and I was happy about it because it was partly the result of my exercising a lot more than I was previously (which was not really at all). I’ve been feeling in much better shape lately so I’m enjoying it while it lasts.
It’s ridiculous how quickly our apartment goes from unpleasantly chilly to uncomfortably hot. I’m not complaining…I prefer it hot. But it’s just hilarious that last week I was in a fleece and scarf and slippers and yesterday I was in as little clothing as possible and had to stick my head in the freezer.
This week basically feels like a countdown. Countdown to my last day of work (Wednesday), my last day home before heading up to NH (Thursday), the rehearsal dinner (Friday), and of course to Saturday. I have no idea how I’ll feel that day and I imagine it will be kind of a blur. About 42 people have advised me to enjoy the day because it goes by fast. So…I’ll try to do that.
Inexplicably, I got the most amazing nights of sleep for the past three nights.
kind of forgot
April 25, 2009 at 11:06 pm | In favorite things | Leave a Commenthow EVERYTHING in life is nicer in warm weather, including but not limited to: sitting on the front steps reading a magazine, freeing one’s body from lots of heavy clothing, and cooking dinner with the kitchen windows open while not wrapped in a blanket and wearing a scarf. I’m NOT WRAPPED IN A BLANKET. It’s so weird.
